Diphtheria in Haiti
Between 1 January and 26 May 2026, 1,616 suspected cases of diphtheria have been reported in Haiti, of which 159 cases and 5 deaths were confirmed. Confirmed cases have been reported in all ten departments of the country. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on diphtheria.
Plague in USA
On 11 June 2026, the first fatal human case of plague for 2026 was reported in New Mexico. The case was detected in Santa Fe County. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on plague.
Murray Valley encephalitis in Australia
On 10 June 2026, local health authorities in Western Australia reported a death from Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE). The case was likely exposed in the West Kimberley region. Health surveillance programs continue to detect MVE activity across the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Travellers should avoid mosquito bites.
Mpox in Madagascar
Between 18 December 2025 and 9 June 2026, a total of 2,000 confirmed mpox cases and seven deaths have been reported in Madagascar. Clade Ib mpox has been detected amongst confirmed cases. Please see our Topics in Brief article for further details on mpox.
Hantavirus in Tristan de Cunha ex cruise ship
As of 10 May 2026, the UK Health Security Agency have confirmed a case of Andes virus linked to MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak on Tristan de Cunha. This case was previously noted as a probable case and does not alter the total of 13 cases (three deaths) linked to this outbreak.
